Most retirement plans partner with an Investment Platform who holds the plan assets and most Investment Platforms also Recordkeep for the plan (track source data - deferrals, match, profit sharing, vesting, etc). Some retirement plans utilize individual brokerage accounts to hold the plan assets rather than the more formal platform.

In short, the Investment Platform is an "Employee Portal" where participants can view their account balance & manage investments.
